An on-site server can still be a sensible choice when a business has local application requirements, high-volume file activity, or a need for fast access within the office. The trade-off is that the business remains responsible for hardware, power protection, cooling, maintenance, and a secure off-site backup.

A hybrid setup often provides a practical middle ground. A local server can support applications or active project data, while cloud services handle email, collaboration, remote access, and off-site copies of critical information. This approach is not automatically better, but it can preserve what works while reducing the consequences of a single equipment failure.

Build a Budget Around the Full Lifecycle

The purchase price of a server is only one part of the cost.
